V.M.C. ASSOCIATION.
The annual meeting of the members of the V.M.C. Association was held on March 29 in the lecture hall, when the President, Mr J. L. Wilson, occupied the chair. There was a large attendance of young' men. On the platform were the Revs. R. F. Macnicol, F. Larkins, Salter, Messrs T. Buddie and C. E. Button. The hall was tastefully decorated with flags and evergreens in pots. Apologies for non-attendance were read from the Mayor (Mr D. Goldie), F. Battley, and Theo. Cooper; also from a number of ministers. The Chairman intimated that this ANNUAL REPORT. Mr T. Buddie, hon. secretary, read the annual report* which stated that the Association sought to be helpers to the churches in leading young men towards Christian influence. Full members must belong to churches, but associates had the privileges without a vote in the management. The library included 4,156 books, with a monthly circulation of about 350 volumes. Only 130 books were added to the library during the year. The report referred to the good work done by Mr C.E. Button's Sunday afternoon lectures; also the Sunday evening services in the Opera House. The report also stated that Mr- E. Rimmer had been appointed leader of the choir, and thanks were accorded to Miss Rimmer for solo singing. 'The cricket club had shown solid progress, having a membership of from 40 to 50, enabling the club to have three teams in the field. The receipts and expenditure just, balanced. An Association football club was also formed last winter with a membership of 30, and had done good work. The Educational Class also showed very satisfactory progress. A Young Men's Mission Band had been formed, and will commence operations in April. The 'Monthly Record' also had done good work in publishing matter during the year. The General Secretaryhad been able to secure situations for some young men, arid given introductions to others going away. Reference was made to the visits of various missionaries, and it was stated that an invitation had been sent1 to Mr Moody to visit the colonies. Mr Arthur Carr, who had taken up. mission work in India, was bidden farewell to by the Association during the year. . BALANCE SHEET. Mr Hemery, the hon. treasurer, read the balance-sheet for the year ending 28th February, 1899. Receipts.—Balance in hand, £2 12/9; subscriptions, £172 18/5; rents, £325 19/5; hire of halls, £56; donations, £163 16/9; city mission, £64 18/5; other receipts, £42 10/3: total, £828 16/.. '
Expenditure.—Salaries, £262 6/; interest, £140; rates, £52 10/5; fire insurance, £26 0/9; gas, £46 6/11; water, £14 16/; advertising, £12 14/6; printing, £2 17/6; reading room, £35 9/9; library, £30 6/; city mission, £120; all other expenditure, £85.3/2; balance in hand, 5/: total, £828 16/.
The report and balance-sheet were then adopted.
Mr Robert Duthie then contributed very creditably the sacred solo 'Will You Anchor Safe.'
Mr Heniery, sen., spoke with regard to a scheme to increase the membership of the Association. He thought everyone should introduce at least one new member during, the year.
