NEW ZEALAND', OFFER.
TUTANEKAIORDERED BACK
TO BE-READY TO CARRY TROOPS
AND DESPATCHES
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day
The news of. the disaster sustained by the British and American forces at Samoa caused much excitement in the city, and it 'is understood that volunteers would be immediately available here if needed. The Premier has ordered the Tutanekai and volunteers to be in readiness for prompt despatch to Samoa in the everit of any further communication from the Imperial Government, The Premier points out that had New Zealand's offer been accepted, the contingent would have been on the scene by this time.
In the interview I learned that the Premier has ordered the Tutanekai to proceed to Auckland, and be in readiness for any emergency, while the volunteers will be prepared to embark at the shortest notice. He deeply regrets that the Imperial authorities cfid not see fit to accept the offer of assistance as soon as it was offered instead of remaining silent for etght days. Had the contingent been despatched promptly it would have been on the scene before this, and in readiness to wipe out the .recent repulse. His.offer to the Imperial Government looks like an inspiration.
