THE CALLIOPE DOCK

SATISFACTORY ARRANGEMENTS,

CABLEGRAM FROM MR BRIGHAM.

To-day the. Auckland. Harbour Board authorities received a cable-messa-o-e from Mr J. M. Brigham, who is at present in London in connection with the negotiations for the Admiralty subsidy to the Calliope Dock and the thorough equipment of the dock as a naval repairing depot. The cable-o-ra-m (the text of which the chairman of the Board does not think politic iust-at present to make public) is ot a satisfactory and reassuring character It is expected that, the negotiations will be satisfactorily concluded, and that in.a week or so a message will be received stating that the necessary agreement has been signed m London. , ~ This will be gratifying news, and it may then be expected that Auckland will take its position as one of the principal naval stations in the Pacific. It is thought that possibly the Samoa complications have hastened the Action of the British* Government in fhe matter of the subsidy, as Auckland is so much nearer Samoa than Sydney is, and is a much more convened rendezvous of ships of war from that part of -the South Pacific. /
