LONDON, April 12
A Franco-Belgian loan has been secured for the construction of the PeUin to Hankow railway.
The 'Times,' commenting on the matter, says Britain protested too iate against foreign construction of the line, and adds that the pledge obtained from China that the Valley of the Yangtse would not be alienated to any other Power is worth just as miich as Britain decides to make it.
PEKIN, April 12
A Franco-Belgian four and a half million live per cent, loan in gold has been secured for the construction of the I'ekin to Hankow railway. A Belgian syndicate also obtained preemption for the construction of a railway from Hankow to Canton. Even American capitalists were unable to secure, a contract, despite the claim made by Sir Claude Mac Donald for pre-emption on behalf of the Anglo-Eastern syndicate.
HONG KONG, April 13
German forces in the province of Shantung destroyed with dynamite three villages in punishment for a recent attack upon a German patrol.
