Thomas Garland, 21 years of age, eon of Mr John Garland, of Awitu, attempted suicide by jumping, overboard from the steamship Weka while travelling from Av/itu to Onehunga on Monday. The young man was being brought to Dr. Scott, of Onehunga, for medical examination, he having manifested signs of insanity. When about half-way towards Onehunga, he vaulted over the side of the steamer into the water. A life-belt was immediately thrown out, and a boat lower- *' "v^ en he was rescued. After medical examination Garland was committed to the Avondale Asylum yesterday
