DISTRESS IN WELLINGTON.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day
A largely attended meeting of wage earners was held last night under the auspices of the Brotherhood of Labour, instituted some time ago here with the object of ameliorating the condition of workers generally. It was stated that the Wellington Benevolent Society was distributing 3000 rations weekly, which the Rev. Evans deplored as a blot on the democracy, remarking that the distress in the city was appalling. Mr Hutcheson, M.H.R.. also addressed the meeting. Ii- was resolved, after a long discufi-f-ion, to organise the unskilled labour in Wellington under the Brotherhood of Labour, with a view to dealing with eases not reached by trades unions, and securing employment at a living wage; afterwards to extend efforts to other cities.
