DAMMING THE NILE.

DUKE OF CONNAUGHT FORMALLY INAUGURATES THE WORK.

At Assuan on February 12 the Duke of Conpaught, who was accompanied by the Duchess, laid the foundation stone of the great reservoir dam at the top of the cataract there. His Royal Highness was presented with a silver trowel, and declared the stone well and truly laid in the name of the Khedive.

The dam will be a mile and a quarter in length, 80ft wide at the base, arid 80ft high. It will raise the level of the Nile for a distance of 140 miles.
