THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.

(By Telegraph—O-wn Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, Thursday.

Mr Ruddick, Government Dairy InBpectpr,. xefewned to Wellington last Bight fronf s®'visit to the Hawke's Bay district. i^Matawhero he gave a leetore on dairying, before a large audience of dairymen and farmers, though only a few hours' notice had been given. He also visited the dairy at Hastings. Mr Ruddick finds the settlers in all the districts he has visited tricot anxious to adopt modern methods and apparatus of the latest type. There is a gratifying absence of that attitude of obstinate hostility to modera innovations and scientific processes which is so obstructive of progress in older countries. From this and other favourable conditions of soil Jand climate and abundance of good water and pasture, Mr Ruddick is very hopeful Of a great future for the dairy industries of the colony. Referring to the complaints in London of the excessive nse of boric acid with a view to improving the keeping qualities of butter he believes the ultimate success Of the' New Zealand product against foreign competitors will largely depend upon the extent to which the producers are able to turn out an article of good quality and long-keep-ing properties without artificial aid, in the form of deleterious additions.
