AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE.
The ordinary meeting of the Auckland University College Council was held yesterday afternoon, .when there were present Sir G.M.O'Rorke (chairman), Rev. W. j. Williams, Messrs F. E. Baume, R. Hobbs, C. T. Major, Gerald Peacocice, I and Dr; R. C. McLaurin. > ■ ■ I Sinclair and Gillies Scholarships.-Sir G. M. O'Rorlje brought up the question of.'? i the desirability of altering the conditions' '! of' the Sinclair and Gillies Scholarships so as to preclude students of the College ; from competing for those- scholarships.' iHe said" that he had looked into thejfta question, and had cone to the conclusion ..; that as 'these scholarships were established for the benefit of children of poor' ', parents, he considered that in the future , these scholarships should be reserved exclusively for children of parents who are. not able to give theni a university educa- \; tion without the aid of the scholarships established by the late Judge Gillies and Mr Sinclair. The committee appointed to ! consider the matter recommended that in future all persons who ■ may have en-: '* joyed Junior "University Scholarship or kept terms or attended lectures in any . university or university college shall b& excluded from competing for either a Sin-"'';■ j clair or Gillies Scholarship, and that >i ! holder of one of these scholarships be not ! allowed to hold a Junior Scholarship. The j Gommittee proposed to alter Regulation . • r No. 2 as.follows:—These scholarships ar& . i open to all persons, male or female, born I in the Colony of New Zealand who at the time of examination shall be between- the ' - age ofs of 16 and 20 years, who have not kept terms or attended lectures or held a $ scholarship in any university or college, ,f who shall satisfy the Council of the College that neither they nor their parents or guardians can obtain for them a university education without pecuniary aid:r : The holder of one of these scholarships; not to be allowed to hold a Junior University Scholarship • concurrently with a Sinclair : or Gillies Scholarship-? It was also considered that , the winner of a junior scholarship should ; not also hold a Sinclair or Gillies Scholarship.— Theße recommendations were t^.,' agreed to, and it was resolved to alter * the regulations in conformity therewith,.' so as to. debar students of the College from competing for these scholarships.— ! The question of the pass subjects was. . discussed, and the question of making desirable alterations in the subjects was.; , referred to the Professorial Board. Caretakers.—The appointment of Mr ; V and Mrs Johnston as caretakers of the College buildings .was confirmed. ■ ;■:.:. Tenders.—Ten tenders were received for the erection of a considerable addition to the College buildings, to provide additional class-rooms. The estimate of- t:ne. cost by the Public Works Engineer, Mr Vickerman, was £1250. The lowest ten- , der was that of V. Casey,. £950, but the next lowest tender, that of J. Guthrto, . £111G 11/, was accepted. The other tenders ranged from £1178 to £1519. . Finances.—Mr F. E. Baume brought u» the question of the Council's finances, and said the whole question of the College expenses, the salaries; etc., must oe fe considered by the Council. He said ,■»*;:•/; would move, at next meeting, 'That tna mi question of re-engagement of professors and lecturers, the amount of salaries, aajo disposal of fees be referred to a subcommittee consisting: of the chairman,; s Messrs Goldie, Peacocke, Major, and tot mover.' ■ Si!
