THE PREMIER.
FROM TE KUTTI TO NEW PLY-
MOUTH
The following is part of our special reporter's telegram concerning the Premier's trip overland to New Plymouth, which reached us too late for our last issue:—
After passing through native country and lands leased to Europeans, south of the Mokau River, the Derwen improved farm settlement is reached. It extends for a mile to the Tongaporutu River and McCoy's accommodation house. Again swimming had to be resorted to. Just across the river the Tongaporutu improved farm settlement is situated. Passing along some five miles of firstclass country the ascent of Mount -Messenger is commenced. To the summit, is about 600 feet, with beautiful bush scenery all along the road, which is well formed, with an easy grade for driving. Across the range the. Lipperton special settlement is passed through, and five miles further on the Oreti improved farm.settlement is reached. Here an address of welcome was presented to the Premier.
Leaving Oreti (where there is a telephone, station), for about ten miles first-class native land is passed through (some leased and farmed by Europeans) until Urenui is reached. This is an old settlement, and seems very prosperous. From Oreti to Waitara the country is well settled, principally native lands. From Waitara to New Plymouth was travelled after dark.
WELLINGTON, this day. The Premier returned to Wellington this (Wednesday) morning. •
It is reported that the Premier will deliver a political address at Hastings next week.
