MARKET REPORT.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency report:—Our catalogue on Tuesday was an average one. Hides In demand, more especially cow. We sold picked ox, sjd to Sid; stout, 5d to 5Jd; medium, 4Jd to 4j'd; light, 32d to 4d; kip, 3i;d; cow, 3Jd to 4d; picked, to 4gd; calf, sound, 3d to 4d; cut. 2d to 3d; stags', 2id to 3.', d Sheepskins: Salted pelts, 1/3 to 2/4; lambs', salted, 1/4 to 2/3; weevil-eaten pelts at much lower prices. Tallow easier, 13/ to 14/0 per cwt. Maize: A fairly large parcel came forward from the coast, but as fowl wheat was very scarce this week it sold readily at 2/3 o.w. There was also a fair quantity exported. Oats: Stocks are very light, and aU shipments coming to hand are selling freely at 1/10 on wharf, sacks extra. Chaff: No alteration from last week, namely, £2 to £2 2/6 ex rail.
A lecture on 'Bone, Brain, Blood and Beer' was delivered by Dr. Hosking last evening in the Tabernacle grounds, Upper Queen-street. The lecturer illustrated his address by means of limelight pictures thrown on the wall of the church, diagrams being displayed to show the physiological action of alcohol. Medical authorities were quoted in support of the lecturer's contentions with regard to the injurious effect of alcohol upon the system.
