BENEVOLENT SOCIETY'S CARNIVAL.

' There was a good attendance at the Xadies' Benevolent Society's Carnival yesterday afternoon, and the day's programme was carried out successfully. The Maypole Dance by pupils of. Mrs Osmond was much admired, and the tricks of Professor Kear's clever performing dogs drew an appreciative audience to the sports track. Punch and Judy, manipulated by Mr Bushby, also lent their distinguished patronage to the proceedings. The chief atraction of the afternoon, however, was a balloon ascent by Captain Lorraine. His fine balloon 'Empress' -was ready for its aerial flight by a quarter to five, and at five o'clock the €aptain made his ascent. The balloon soared high, travelling in the direction of the harbour; but before it reached the water the aeronaut released his parachute and descended, alighting safely on a timber - stack in Mr D. Goldie's yard, near the Freezing "Works. The balloon soon collapsed, and falling into the water near Logan Bros.' boat-sheds was recovered without difficulty.. Great credit is due to the ladies connected with the Carnival for the tasteful decorations of the kiosks. One and all are admirably arranged. The following ladies are in attendance at the various stalls:—No. 1 Court — Jumble stall: Mesdames Clifford, A. Stevens. nnd Williamson, assisted by Miss M Stanley and Mrs Huxtable. In No. 2 Court Miss Maxwell, a recent arrival from England, cuts patterns to measure for a small charge by her 'British System of Dress Fitting.' Adjoining is a stand of bouquets and floral decorations, ■which make a handsome display. Mr Burster's exhibition of .stereoscopic •news is located in the first Court. During the afternoon an enjoyable musical programme was gone through at the rotunda by Hunter's string band.
