WELLINGTON, this day. Parliament has been prorogued till May 11. Mr L. Cohen, of Marton, will be a ! candidate for the Senate of the New j Zealand University for the vacancy caused by the death of the Rev. Habens. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Mrs Ernest Patten, a very old Canterbury settler, was taken suddenly ill in the street last night and was carried into an adjoining shop and died. She had been previously attended by a doctor, who gave a certificate of death from heart disease. With regard to the fire at the Belfast Freezing Works, the building destroyed has been accepted as a total loss, the insurance companies' loss being £ 1,573. The value of the machinery saved has been assessed, at £667. A new temporary building is in course of erection, and the Company will be enabled to resume fellmongering this week. Last night Messrs J. W. Griffin, J. A. Lochore, and T. B. Richards, who are at the Wesleyan Conference now sitting, were received into full connection and were ordained. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. In the case of Robert Carlyle, charged at the Criminal Sittings with housebreaking, and remanded yesterday, a medical examination was made by Dr. Burns, who testified that the man was perfectly sane, and was sentenced to four years' imprisonment. The Rev. A. Cameron, of Anderson Bay, is a candidate for the New Zealand University Senate vacancy. At the Supreme Court, the boy WesK was again charged with rape on a child. The jury returned a verdict ol! not guilty, and the boy was dis« charged. INVERCARGILL, Tueday. Major General Sir Charles Holled Smith, has been spending a five weeks' holiday in New Zealand, was a passenger by the W;aikare for Melbourne to-day. Two young men, John Moffatt and Andrew Howard, who arrived from the North a few days ago, were today jharged with stealing from a bedroom in the London Hotel, and were remanded.
