GOLF.

Last Saturday the first match of the I season was played by the Golf Club. The I weather was splendid and the links were ■:_ I in excellent order, and it is difficult, I therefore to account for the poorness of ', j the scores handed in, which were without exception very bad. A moderate breeze was blowing from the south-west, and this may have accounted for the generalgolfing paralysis which seemed to have taken possession of the club. The south* :. west wind should be a great assistance to a low score, as it favours the player at most of the holes. Most players got into trouble at Bamford's Hole by over-shoot-ing the green, and a good deal of trouble was caused at the Remuera Hole from the same cause. The first prize fell to Mr Leatham, and the second prize was divided by Messrs Carr, Burness, and A. Clark. The following are some, of the scores:— ... ' ' '-'ZMr Leatham, 108, less 9—99; Mr CarT, 101t ■■■ scratch—lol; Mr Burness, 101, scratch— 101; Mr A. Clark, 123, less 22—101; Mr Alfred Walker, 110, less 10—102; Mr Grimshaw, 102, scratch—lo2; Mr Reed, 113, less 10—103; Mr Turner, 113, less 8—105; Dr.. Lewis, 120, less 13—107; Mr Caldwell, 11». less 7-108; Mr Hogg, 122, less 13—109. several other scores were handed In. On Saturday next the first match for the handsome trophy presented to the. club by Mr E. D. O'Rorke will be played - ■ for. Players may choose their own partners for the first match.but will be drawn together for the second match, which takes place on Saturday, 18th March Players who miss either match will still- ; be able to compete and send in a Bcpre , . for one round, but they will be at a great disadvantage.' The conditions on which the prize will be played for are that two rounds of medal play will be played, one on each Saturday. From these tvio rounds a round is made up of the best ] performance for each hole. Thus, if the player take six for the first hole next Saturday and four for the same hole the next Saturday, four will be his score fpr the hole. Special handicaps will have to be made for the event and will be posted in the club-house. The Ladies' Club holds its annual meeting at the club-house to-morrow, aiu*. the meeting of the Auckland Golf Cluß will shortly be held. ______________________________«____________________.
