A COSTLY THRASHING.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

INVEECAEGILL, this day.

Substantial damages wer awarded by Magistrate Poynter at Winton in the case of William Trethaway v. William and James Swale, claim £200 damages for beating plaintiff's son, who was employed on defendants' farm. Several articles had been missed, and the boy, it is said, was caught leaving with some eggs. Defedants, it was alleged, tied him by the hands and feet, and beat him with a stockwhip. Medical evidence showed there were a number of weals and bruises on the body, but not of a serious nature. The Magistrate thought the Swales might have thought they were doing the best for the boy, but they had violated a principal held sacred in British law, exemption from personal violence. Judgment was given for £50 and costs, £.12 19/8.
