The proposed alterations to the Alameda and Mariposa include the substitution of triple engines for the present compound, and new boilers, ~ securing a gain of 300 horse-power and one knot in speed.- The cargo-carry-ing- capacity will be increased by 357 tons, while the cousumption of fuel will be largely reduced. Each vessel will be alternately, withdrawn from the service for 90 days, while the machinery and boilers are being installed. The passenger cabins are to be reno- ~ vated at an outlay of £10,000.
