SUPPOSED DROWNING.

(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, this day

,Miss Bess, a passenger by the Pukaki from Westport to. Wellington, disappeared from the steamer yesterday afternoon. She was last seen about 3.30, when she was reading- in her cabin about one. hour before the I'ukaki reached the heads. Search was made, but. no trace of the young woman could be found. There'is no reason to suspect suicide, and it is supposed she must have fallen 'overboard. On a coal boat like the Pukaki there are very few hands on deck, and Miss Boss' disappearance might easily pass unnoticed. Miss lioss was 23 years of age, a school teacher of Westport, and was taking a trip for the benefit of her health* accompanied by her mother.
