The Shtiw, Savill, and Albion Com■pany's new steamer Waiwera, which was launched from the yards of Messrs W. Denny ' and Bros., at Dumbarton, on December 15*. left London last Saturday . week for New Zealand ports, via Capetown.1 Her dimensions are: — Length overall 440 feet, breadth of beam moulded 54 feet, and depth moulded 40 feet 10 inches. She has been built to meet the requirements of Lloyd's highest class. In a compartment on the Shelter deck amidships there is accommodation for a limited number oi first class passengers, while aft on the upper deck she has accommodation for a very large number of third class passengers. This accommodation is portable, and the space can esisily be made available for currying cargo when there are no passengers.. The rudder is of the latest pattern single plate, with Lawson's patent bearing arm. Having been built for •carrying frozen mutton from New Zealand, there is a complete installation of refrigerating machinery, constructed by Haslam and Co., of Derby. This consists Qi two large machines, one foY cooling the air. in the. forward holds, md one aft for the after holds. She has five holds, three of which have been insulated up to the upper decks.
