RAGLAN COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the RaglaJJ County Council, which is only held quarterly and usually extends over several days, was commenced at Ngaruawahia on Wednesday last.
It was resolved not to join with various other local bodies in an attempt to maka the Waikato County Council a contributing body to the maintenance of the Ngaruawahia Bridge.
Mr C. W. Hursthouse notified the Council that the following grants for the RagJan County had been authorised:—RaglanRuapuko Road, £100; Raglan-Waipa Rd.,----£200; Aotea-Raglan Road, £124; Wainga-ro-Te Mata Road, £100; Kauroa-Rakoka. Road, £100. Other grants of which notice was given by the Lands and Survey Department were:—Raglan-Waipa Road, £200; Waingaro-Te Mata Road* £120.
The Minister of Marine wrote With reference to foreshore rent received unden th 6 New Zealand Land Association license being paid to the Council. He stated that rent is only payable to Harboun Boards when the foreshore has been vestv ed in Harbour Boards by Act of Parlia-* ment. .
The Land and Income Tax Department! forwarded subsidy amounting to £233.
The Council voted £30 as compensation! to Mr Bregmen for the road taken through! his .property, and MrDrury was instructed to survey the said road and also the roacfc taken through section 184, Whangape.
It was resolved to remove the punt from' Churchill to Rangiriri.to reduce the fees, and to call for tenders for the erection of yards and approaches, and also' for tha position of caretaker. .•
The, Commissioner of Crown Lands forwarded a schedule of thirds due to ths Council up to January 31st, 1899, amounting to £325.
The engineer was empowered to arrang« with Mr Sutherland the amount of roy-alty-to be paid for gravel.
An auctioneer's license was granted td Mr A. R. Langley, of Raglan.
Mr A. R. Langley was appointed furzai inspector to the Council, and it was resolved to issue notices to offending landowners at once.
The application of a deputation to havat the new road from Rangiriri to Huntl^ surveyed was provisionally agreed to.
Mr Te Akau waited upon the Council r« the payment of rates dn native land.: \tter he had explained his proposal tha Council agreed that a Maori collector, nominated by a Maori council, should bft empowered to collect the rates on Maori lands, such moneys to be handed to tha Council collector, the Council agreeing! to vote the moneys so collected to be expended on roard works on condition thai! the Maori council submit a scheme of expenditure for approval. /' It was agreed that the GOvernmenfl grant of £100 now available for opening up Block VI. should be spent on the southern end of the block joining access toi West Coast road.
The following tenders were confirmed :-;■« Clearing oh Churchill Road* E. Bregmenj Worsp's Road, John Bruce; Shepherd's. Road, Bradley and Co; Kahuruhuru Valley, H. Terua; Springs Road, J. K. McDonald. The Council resolved to apply to the Government for grants amounting to £4400. ' ' Notice to strike a gerieral rate was given:—Karamu Riding; %& in the £; Whangape, Waingaro, Karioi, Pirongia* and Onewhero, ditto; Te Akau, Jd; hospital rate, Id in £. ■ , It was decided to lease the Ferry Reserve opposite Ngariiawahia by tender fort a term of 14 years; £105 Was voted for expenditure in the Whangape Riding, £10 In Pirongia, and £60 in Onewhero, and: accounts amounting to £430 were passed*
At a Domain Board meeting held subsequently Mr R. C. Mathias was elected! chairman for the ensuing year. A special meeting was held, for ,tha purpose of determining some of the ridings, and the following motion was carried by 5 to 3:—'That Opaatia Nps. 2 and 3 be severed from the Onewhero Riding and added to Whnngape, the latter rid-. Ing to have two members.'
