AUCKLAND TYPOGRAPHICAL ASSOCIATION.

The annual meeting of the Auckland Typographical Association was held on Saturday evening, in the* Courtroom, Foresters' Hall, Newton. There was a good attendance, and the Hon. W. T. Jennings (president) occupied the chair. It was resolved to vote two guineas to the Grey Statue Fund, in addition to the amount raised by subscription among members. The printed report and balancesheet were submitted, and on the motion of Mr Hall, seconded by Mr Campbell, adopted. The balancesheet showed receipts for the past half-year to have been £49 10/5; expenditure, £76 4/2. Of the expenditure, £45 was paid to men who were leaving the trade, owing to the introduction of linotype composing machines, £ 5 5/ for travelling allowance, £8 17/3 for printing, and £2 10/ for out-of-work pay. The total amount paid in retiring allowances during1 the

past year was £95. In the face of the heavy items of expenditure, the Board congratulated members upon the healthy condition of the funds, the amount to credit standing at £ 162 4/6. As it is unlikely that there will again be such heavy calls upon the funds as there have been during the past two half-years, the Board hope to see the Association's credit balance steadily increase. Five new members were admitted during the past six months, and the total number of financial members.on the roll is 97. The report stated that the Association was now duly registered under 'The Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act. The subject of linotype operators, _ their wages, hours, etc., was dealt with in the report. A deputation had been appointed to wait upon local firms with the object of securing' better terms, ou tlie basis of the settlement recently arrived at with the operators in Christ-church and Wellington. A lengthy discussion took place on this [question, find it was unanimously lington terms were the least that could be asked for in Auckland.
