NIGHT SHELTER.
(To the Editor.)
Sir-Now that the Exhibition is closed and a substantial surplus to be disposed of, I hope the committee will see their way clear to grant a small sum to a cause that needs assistance. At. present we have no 'all-night shelter' in this beautiful city. It is to be regretted that some of our fellow citizens are compelled through force of circumstances to spend thai night in the Domain or walk the streets for want of shelter. I know the old objection will be raised that we must not concentrate this class. Let me say first of all they are not all bad who are thus unfortunate, and second of all the Salvation Army have proved that thesa institutions can be made productive of good to those benefited. 1 believe they would be quite willing to officer and carry on an institution of this character if a lump sum could be given for a building. By this means an unfortunate class are brought in contact with Christian men and helped to obtain employment. Abundant evidence of good results comes to us from the neighbouring colonies. With such a building no man willing to work for bed and breakfast need spend the night in the open air. I trust this very modest suggestion will commend itself to the Exhibition Committee, believing they will rest more sweetly in their own cosy beds with the consciousness that they have given shelter to some poor homeless wanderers during the coming winter.—l am, etc.,
