CRIMINAL SESSIONS.
(By Telesraph.-Own Correspondent.)
DUNEDIN, this day
The criminal sittings opened .this forenoon. Judge Pennefather, addressing the grand jury, said: 'I regret to inform you that the calendar, though shorter than those in other towns of the same size as Dunedin, is a larger one than has been on any previous occasion during the past year. It would seem that a wave of crime against morality, which is apparently passing over the country, has not left this district untouched, and it is a matter of serious consideration whether it really is evidence of general deterioration of character amongst the community, or whether it merely is that attention has lately been drawn to an evil which has long been lurking in our midst. In all offences, and especially offences of this kind, the difficulty arises as to. the right form of punishment in the case of juvenile offenders, and I .am -sorry to have to add that it is a problem which is still unsolved.' . .
James Bowen Smith, for failing to comply with the terms of his probation, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment on the original offence of theft.
