False Pretences.— A. young man named George Frederick Porter, alias Terence E. Blaelcwood, ple.idad gujlty to a charge of having on January 20, at Dargaville, obtained by :t false pretence a suit of clothes/and other sulticles, and £1 1/ in money, from Edwin MitehelsOn; and also to a tjharge of having1 on January *■'>, at .Dargavil3e, attempted to obtain from Patrick Lynch by a false pictence the siim of £2 2/. —Constable Gordon, of Dargaville, said the prisoner was convicted last year of for;.;1; nif and utteringl, and was admitted to probation. He had been gumcligg'ing in the Kidpara district previotis to passing the valueless cheques for which he w;is arrested. —His Honor said tlu» previous leniency of. the Court was thrown away on the accused. Tk.2 sentence would be two years" imprisonment with hard labour. Addierisiny; Mr Lynch, on whom the priscuc:l had attempted to pass a valiH'!'?-^ cheque, His Honor commended the conduct of that witness in connection with the cheque, and said he wished everyone else would be as careful as lir Lynch when suspicious cheques were presented. His Honor said he often had occasion to remark on the way in which many people took any sort, of cheque from anyone. It was really a temptation to crime—A similar case was that against James Charles son, who pleaded guilly to charges of false pretences at Huntly. The charges were that he had forged a cheque and used the same, and obtained by false pretences from Anthony Deville the sum of £2 14/, and from Matthew Prior £2 18/. After evdience was given. His Honor remarked on the necessity for more care being taken to see that cheques presented by unknown persons were genuine. His Honor imposed a sentence of three years" imprisonment with hard labour in the Auckland gaol on each charge, the sentences to run concurrently.
