GOSSIP ON THE DAY'S RACING
MELBOURNE, March 4,
With the exception of Babadil, the St. Albans horses were decidedly off colour yesterday, even Revenue failing to create as favourable an impression as in the spring.
Wait-a-Bit, who started at three to one, won the Essendon Stakes brilliantly, covering the last five furlongs in lm 2s, and finishing as true as a die, whilst also giving the impression that he could last another mile and a half.
Bobadil traversed the last five furlongs in the St. Leger in lm 4}s. Although the majority of the bookmakers enjoyed a regal day. some tew were unfortunate enough to lay both Forest and Carevie. On the course one of the pencillers accommodated a client with 700 to 14 about Forest. Mr James Lynch, the trainer of Forest, supplies the training notes to the Melbourne Age. Some time back he supported his horse to win £2000, but subsequently hedged one fourth of that amount. Whilst performing consistently well prior to the Standish Handicap, since then Forest has cut a most inglorious figure even in suburban company, and this combined with the fact that a doubt existed as to his thorough soundness caused the public to allow him to drift out of consideration. He was generally exercised during the afternoon so that his name was seldom mentioned in the training reports. Mr Tom Uphill, Indian buyer, who presumably owns Forest, landed close on £4000, about one half of the total of the money won over the victory.
