SYDNEY, March 4. Lord Hampden, in the course of an interview, said the union of the colonies was inevitable. No man capable of seeing what is happening- so close to Australia, and who is imbued with the true spirit of patriotism, could be -\ other than an ardent federalist. With the development of China, Japan, and the Philippines, trade must be largely increased. Much of this must come Australia. The position in the Pacific was becoming completely changed. ~; and the nations which formerly had i no interest were now becoming interested. This would bring Australia • into closer touch with foreign troubles and complications.
