The annual contest of the New, Zealand Band Association commenced at Dunedm yesterday with the quickstep competition test "march, 'The Gladiator,' for' cash prizes and points in. Beeson Shield competjtioh. Bands to be judged.on music,marching' and drill. • South Canterbury' Battalion: .Drill, 78, music 29, total 107, first; Wellington Garrison: Drill 70, lmisic 30, total 100, second; Kaikorai: Drill 69," music 30, total 99, third; North East Valley:' Drill 65, music 2S, total 93; Stanmore, drill 58, nausic 26, total 83. The competition will be continued to-nig-ht. - - ;'
At the Bands Contests the quartette competition was taken jmrt in by Wellington Garrison, Kaikorai, Stanmore» Dunedin Engineers and North East Valley teams. It is the first competition of the kind. Only two out of five entrants for the baritone solo appeared. Six took part in the euphonium contest. All decisions are deferred till Thursday.
