THE EXHIBITION.
During1 yesterday and last night large crowds visited the Exhibition. The competitions in the Choral Hall attracted large crowds. This morning the Hon. A. J. Cadmaii paid a visit to the Exhibition, being escorted through by Mr B/Kent. - The Exhibition will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. throughout the holidays.
In the Mining Court oi me Exhibition, jjlaced over Captain Hodge's collection are large oil paintings of various mines at Coroxaandel, and other views. Five of these are by. Mr YV. j Huddlestone, and one by Mr Theodore Drew. The results of the various competi-' tions were publicly announced as | under:' — Soprano, Miss Maud Howard, 1;, Miss Ci.. Crqwther, \l. Contralto,. Miss Ethel B. Mclntyre, 1. There was no second award. Violin, Miss Alexander. 1; Miss Sybil Lewis, 2. Piano, Mr E. M. YYymau, 1; Miss Siminonds, 2; hon. mention, Miss Maggie Woollams (withj certificate). Humorous recitation, Mr IT. C. Palethorpe, 1; Miss Zoe Bartley, 2; lion, mention, Mr W.I. Smith (with certificate). Dramatic recitations, Mr Geo. i\ewsome, 1; Mrs Alex. Mnrchie, 2; Miss Jennie Pollock and Mr W. J. Smith, hon mention (with certificate). The judges also desire to specially mention the following:—Miss Frances Fraser, Mrs F. A. Burnett, Mr Pollock, Miss Bullin, Miss Rosenthal and Miss Zoe Bartley. In the tenor and baritone competitions the judges were unable to agree, and have recalled three in each class, and Mr Prouse has consented to make a final selection this evening. The selections are: Baritones, Mr Wilfred Manning;, Mr Chas. Kissling and Mr E. Walton: tenors, Mr Abel Rowe, Mr C. W. Wright and Mr A. G. Murphy. THE WHIST AND CHESS TOURNAMENTS. A meeting of the executive was held last evening, the President (Mr B. Kent) in the chair. A letter was read from the hon. managers of the living whist and chess tournaments, stating that the executive had thrown every difficulty in the way, and asking the alteration of the date of the living. whist tournament from January ?> to December .11; also the service of Hunter's Brass Band on the occasion of the performance. The chairman said that instead of placing1 obstacles in the way of the management of the toiirnament the executive had done eveiything in their power to assist those concerned in the carrying out of the entertainments mentioned. It was agreed to alter the date of the Avhist tournament to December 31 as suggested, and to allow the use of a piano only, the chess tournament to be proceeded with as previously fixed by the executive on January 10.
