ADMIRALTY HOUSE.

PROPOSAL BY MR C. A. HARRIS

Mr W. J. Napier has received the following letter from Mr C. A. Harris in reference to the new Admiralty House which the Harbour Board is about to erect: — Thames Exploration Syndicate of London and New Zealand (Limited). Wyndham-strcet, Auckland, December .15, IS9B. W. J. Napier. Esq., Auckland. Dear Sir,—As you have taken so much interest in the past in obtaining a new Admiral's House for Auckland, I beg to suggest the following as a scheme worthy of Auckland ,and will be happy to assist you in every possible way to carry it out. Present Government House and grounds to remain in the Crown for the people of Auckland for ever for a public park, sports and exhibition ground, and other public purposes, with power to charge for admission. Profits to go in keeping all thet grounds in order. Dr. Campbell's house and grounds to be purchased, if possible, for a Government House. Admiral's Plouse to be erected on Campbell's Point Reserve. The Parnell Council, Auckland City Council, and Harbour Board to join the people in accomplishing this. The Parnell Borough Council to grant permission to erect the new Admiral's House on their reserve. FUNDS. Cash from Government, say £1000 Present Admiral's House, say 2500 Proposed site, say 1500 Total £5000 Auckland City Council, say '. £5000 Auckland Harbour Board, say ...... 5000 To bo raised by subscription 10,000 Estimated cost of Dr. Campbell's House and Grounds (furniture at present in Government House) — Estimated cost of . new Admiral's House and Furniture, say ~ £5000 Estimated cost laying out grounds, etc 500 Do. wharf, and approaches 3000 I do not anticipate any difficulty in obtaining £10.000 by public subscription. I will give £100. and almost everyone will, 1 think, assist to carry out the above. I am, dear sir. Yours faithfully. , C. A. HARRIS. Mr Napier has replied to Mr Harris stating that he will bring the proposal contained in the letter before Mr Malcolm Niecol. Chairman of the Harbour Board, who is associated with Mr Napier as a committee to arrange for the erection of the new Admiraltj" House.
