Thirty-five deaths have occurred irom influenza in New York. It is rumoured in Berlin that the Czar,will meet, the Sovereigns of the triple Alliance at Vienna duriim- the spring. The anti-Anarchist Conference has closed, and a protocol embodying the results has been signed by the Powers represented. A Beuter despatch states that America has disbanded 50.000 volunteers. Lord Kitchener has started on a three months' tour of the Gedaref regions, in Upper Nubia. A Renter Despatch states that America has proclaimed military control over the Philippines, giving relief from unjust.- burdens and retaining efficient officials. The Premier of New South Wales, in his statement, in regard to federation, said be would arrange to have ithe whole question first considered by | a conference of Premiers. Natives of Santa Cruz seized a trading cutter, and it is believed that the crew, including two whites, have been massacred. Captain Moore, of the ship Republic, has been sentenced at Sydney to three months' imprisonment for shooting- at a sailor. The charge was reduced to one of common assault. A terrible ease of cruelty is reported from Leongatha, Victoria. Tt is alleged .that a youth named Cameron, 21 years of age, compelled a boy named Higgs to pick no a quantity of 1 red-hot chalk with bis hands, and "also | placed a ouantity in the boy's boots, and made him stand in them. Cameron has been arrested. A French priest has been murdered in n riot at Hnpei. France denies that she has demanded. the cession of territory in the Vank-tse-Fiang Valley, and states that she is merely taking steps to protect individuals from outrages by the natives. Mr Chamberlain favours the establishment of a British Agency in Ouebee. He considers there is a prospect of West Indian exports increasing to two million pounds. The Pennsylvania Steel Company has obtained the contract to make SO.OOO to^s of rails for the transSiberian Railwnv. France prohibits the importation nf wine unless the place of origin is shown.
