WEDNESDAY.
(Before Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M.) Alleged Cruelty to Sheep.—The chief steward of the s.s Hauroto, by name James Campbell, was charged with ill-treating live sheep, by neglecting to supply'them with proper and sufficient iood between December 7 and 11, Mr Brook Held appeared for the prosecution, instructed by Inspector Westby of the S.P.C.A.; Mr .McVeagh, instructed by the Union Steamship Co., appeared for the defendant, and pleaded not guilty. Among the witnesses for the prosecution were William Cochrane, the ship's boy, and John Kneel, seaman on the Hauroto, who deposed that while the sheep had been in Auckland they had nothing to eat from Thursday rill Sunday* when the Inspector visited the vessel. Cochrane said he thought the sheep were hungry on the voyage to Auckland, for they broke open all the pineapple kits and ate r,opes-ends. Inspector Westby, and two other witnesses also gave evidence, For the defence Campbell said he saw the sheep fed on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and Thos." Murphy, the ship's butcher, deposed to feeding the animals regularly. A butcher named John Tucker said sheep like to eat ropes-ends, on account of the salt taste. The sheep in this case were in a healthy condition when he saw then last Tuesday, nml apparently we 11-fed. The case was adjourned, owing- to the absence of one of the witnesses. Beware of the Dog. A small boy clicked a toy-pistol in front of a dog in Albert Street the other day, and was promptly knocked down by the 'animal. A court case was the result, and the owner of the dog, John Ward, ; was lined 10/ and costs. Mr O'Meaj gher appeared for the defence.
