HARCOURT RESIGNS THE LIBERAL LEADERSHIP.
LONDON, December 14
'Sir W. V. Harcourt. in a dignified letter to Mr John Morley, has resigned the leadership of hie party in the House of Comons. He retains his seat, hut acts as a private member. The letter stated that he considers that owing to his leadership being disputed he was beset by distracted sections and conflicting interests. This made his position impossible. He declined to be a candidate for any contested position. },[r Morley, in reply, sympathetically endorsed .Sir William Hareourt's action, and said he was not surprised. The situation had become intolerable. He was indignant that the leadership iiacfso; incessantly been challenged. i-The newspapers are uncertain whether to - regard Sir William Harcourt's resignation as final, or a clever coup to rally the party. Mr Campbell-Bannerman, Mr Asquith, and Sir H. H. Fowler are mentioned as possible successors.
