BACHELORS' BALL KARANGAHAKE
The above ball, given by the bachelors of Karangahake to the married and single ladies, eventuated last Friday nignt In Ryan's Lyceum Hall. The night turned out wet and boisterous, so much so that the committee were undecided until nearly the time for starting—B p.m.--whether they would postpone or go on with the dancing. They, however, decided to carry it out, a decision for which they were afterwards thankful. It was a pretty sight to see all the lahterns dodging hither and thither on the hillside as their fair bearers wended their way to the scene of festivity. Long before 9 o"clock the spacious hall, which was tastefully decorated with ferns, nikau, and wild flowers, was packed to the doors with as bright and cheerful an assemblage as ever met together. The programme commenced with the grand march, in which the costumes of the ladies were shown to advantage as they were whirled about in the different manoeuvres of the march under the electric light. The first part of the programme was got through about midnight, when everyone sat down to a supper, which was catered for by Mr James. After fair justice had been done to the good things, the second part commenced, and was kept up until daylight broke in on the scene, when all left for their different domiciles well pleased with their night's amusement. Great praise is due to the committee and to the secretary, Mr Douglas, for the very creditable manner everything was carried out. As a return to the above the married men are giving a ball on the 25th mat.—(Correspondent.)
