THE COSTLEY HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—The Chairman 'of the Hospital Board deserves great credit for the perseverance which he has displayed in piloting the matter of the Children's Hospital to a successful termination. His enthusiasm has infected others to give liberally towards the furnishing of the building. It is highly gratifying in this instanbe to see the name of the late Mr Edward Costley cut in a marble tablet as a mark of gratitude for his munificent bequest of £12,150t0 the Auckland Hospital, being one of seven similar bequests to public institutions, leaving more hard cash than all our other public benefactors put together. It appears strange that so many years have been allowed to lapse before any remembrance of that bequest should be publicly displayed at the Hospital; but better late than never.

Many years ago when the management of, the Sailors' Home stubbornly refused to allow Costley's name to be put on that building I told the President that it was base ingratitude and short-sighted policy, as such treatment would thoroughly pveven'f any other1 wealthy and kindly-dla-posed persons from leaving similar bequests. He said that in that case it would be greatly to be deplored. I replied that it would be the inevitable result and as certain to be as night folio wed day.

In two or three weeks His Excellency the Governor will be at the Star Hotel for a few days, as he is coming to open the Children's Hospital, and I learn that he has been making inquiries about the various Costley bequests and how they are manipulated.—l am, etc..
