BAND OF HOPE COMPETITIONS.
The annual series of musical, elocutionary, and literary contests held under the auspices of the Auckland Band of Hope Union commenced last evening in the Foresters' Hall, when there was a good attendance. Mr C. J. Hill, president, occupied the chair. Messrs Scott, Wells, and Walker officiated as judges of elocution, and Messrs Walton, Perkins, and England of music. Recitations were given by Louisa Sinclair, Mary Johns, Mary E. Hughes, Elsie Miller, Louisa J. Rosser, Zoe Muriel Bartley, and Marion Spedding. Piano duets were played by Isabella and Ida Spedding, Rona Eva McKenzie and Florence Reynolds, Maud and Eva Rountree, and Mary E. M. and Jessie L. Thorne. Piano solos were pisyed by Norman Williams, Clara May Barker, Wm. N. Davidson, May Hooper.Ruby McMaster, Jessie L. Thorne, Alfred Saun-
ders, Maud Griffin, Pearl Ratcliffe, and Eliza S. Ness.
This evening the programme will comprise vocal solos and recitations for competitors under 16.
