Writing under date of September 3, Messrs H. W. Peabody and Co. reportAustralasian freights are in a demoralised condition, and it is difficult to make
quotations that would hold for any length of time. New Zealand ports have recently been brought into the Australasian freight competition, and rates have decline*;! accordingly. Quotations arcbut nominal, but should be placed at say 20/ to 25/ per ton. The s.s. Queen Louise and the s.s. Alnwick are now loading- for New Zealand ports, and will be despatched about September 15. The Queen Margaret, for New Zetland, will sail about September 24. The barque
Star of the East, for Auckland, ia now loaded, and will shortly be despatched.
