IN MEMORIAM SIR GEORGE GREY.
(Died September 20th, 1898.)
Another English Titan sleeps Beneath his cool grey skies. His work well done. Great Albion s son In restful doath-sleep lies.
Through ardent youth, and manhood's prime He took a hero's part. In loyal service to the State, In deeds that make a nation great; Wise brain and noble heart Looked far into the After-time, And saw young nations born. Strong in the strength of Britain s might. Strong in the Briton's love of Right, Of Freedom, and the scorn Of all things base, and mean, and small. Nor dreamt he empty dreams, But nobly dared, and wisely -wrought To bring to birth the good he thoughtWeaving benignant schemes Of kindly rule and good to all, . That, -whereso'er unfurl d, Our flag in earth's remotest place Should blessings bring to every race And Peace to all the world. The tired body rests at last, England's true soil its bed, , • . , But the great soul made free doth stand, Kingly among the kingly band Of England's noble dead I Zealandia mourns her hero passed From earth and earthly fame; But proudly, for he was her friend, Faithful and staunch until the end, And the memory of his name— The name of Grey shall never die, But history's pen shall tell, And hand it down from age to age, Emblazoned on the storied page Of the land he love^weU pEAcocEj ,
