AUCKLAND REGATTA.

THE NEXT ANNIVERSARY,

APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEE

On Friday evening the annual meeting of those interested in the Auckland Anniversary Regatta was held in the Waiteinata Hotel, Mr A. 11. Nathan presiding.

The Chairman said they had met together for the purpose of carrying out the Anniversary Regatta of January, 1899. The. meeting was called earlier this year so that a good start could be made with the collecting of the necessary subscriptions, as the next regatta was expected to be an unusually important one. The committee had the disadvantage of starting work for the coming regatta with a debit balance of about £40. ,They had paid Siway £237 in. prizes last regatta, and all liabilities would be paid in full. He thought the Auckland people as a whole should be stir* red up to the necessity for liberally subscribing to the regatta funds. Auckland as a city subscribed nothing to the regatta. Outside of Queenstreet the people did not subscribe, although the people had a good day's sport provided for them, which they could witness for nothing. The regatta promoters had no means or providing gate-money, they had no totalisator, and had to rely wholly on voluntary subscriptions from the public. When he (Mr Nathan) was in London lately he was promised a subscription from the Tyser Steamship Co., and he had brought back from England a handsome silver cup, or vase, in the shape of an old English 'loving cup,' which he had had specially made, costing about . twenty guineas, which he intended to present as a trophy for one of the yacht races. (Applause.) Mr Nathan went on to urge the desirability of making the ensuing regatta an excellent one, and he expressed, the hope that the public would come forward liberally on this occasion, so that the anniversary of the colony would be suitably commemorated. Mr S. E. Hughes, treasurer, said that he had been' unable to prepare a bal-ance-sheet yet, but the receipts for .last regatta totalled' £297 5s 9d, and there was ah overdraft of about £40.
