BARRIER REEFS.

A piece of stone from the reef in the west face in this mine was on view to-day at Mr H. Gilfillan's office. It is a line sample showing patches of ruby silver, as well as the broad sulphide seams.

The width of the reef in the west face is 5i feet. During the week it varied from four to five feet six inches, the widest yet met. Two feet next the hanging wall is rubbly quartz, carrying sulphurets, and 18 inches next this is of the same character. The middle portion is mostly massive quartz. The south face .is in 930 feet. The country there now is good in character. It much resembles the casings of the reef in this neighbourhood Two small quartz seams were cut during the week. WENTWORTH (WHANGAMATA.) The return from the treatment by Professor Black's 'Permanganate Process' of one ton of ore from the Studholme Reef in this mine has been received from Professor Black, at Dunedin, and the following is the result. The assay value before treatment was £26 9/8. A parcel of 16ewt. having ■been crushed to a fineness of l-1600th, was roasted in a reverberatory furnace, and leached with chemicals costing 5/6 retail. After percolation from the leaching vat the tailings were foxmd to contain £3 0/10 per ton, thus showing that there had been leached from the ore £23 8/10 per ton. Professor Black forwarded to Auckland a button of pure gold, weighing 3oz lldwt 14grs, of a value of £14 6/4, as the product of 16cwt, or after the rate of £17 12/11 per ton, and this button has been forwarded to the London Board of the option holding compan3 r. It is calculated that the cost of treatment on the mine, including roasting, would not exceed 15/ per ton, and that the extraction would be 90 to 92 per cent, of the gold in a pure state. KAPANGA TRIBUTERS. Another rich haul of picked stone lias been secured by Messrs Home and Johnson, tributers in the Kapanga mine. It is estimated these lucky tributers have already between £400 and £500 worth of ore on hand since crushing a week ago. The prospect of more rich stone being obtained from the same block is also satisfactory. KURANUI - CALEDONIAN COMPANY. The Mining Record of August states that at an extraordinary general meeting of this company a resolution was passed altering the articles of association in respect of the directors' fees in accordance •with the undertaking given at the lecent general meeting. The remuneration of the directors will in future be £150 per annum, to be divided as may be agreed amongst themselves.
