FOOTBALL
Last Saturday the curtain Avas rune - down'on "the '98 footbaal season. Contrary to general expectation, Newton - I succumbed in their eleventh and I final match, being beaten by Suburbs by the narroAV margin of three points. I-ioAvever, this Avas the only defeat they sustained throughout the season, and 1 they have every reason to be proud • of their record. The Suburbs team Avere in great fettle last Saturday. Their victory over Newton supports the contention that given their full strength in evejy match Suburbs must haA^e gone near to winning the Cup. They had thematerial; the difficulty has always" been to get the full team together every week. Considering the distances Avhich some of the Suburban players had to -travel to reach PotterVTacldock, the club did remarkably well, and the players must be congratulate^ on the spirit they shoAved in 'rolling up' whenever it Avas possible. NeAvton's record for the season pans out as follows: — -; <-??|l. May 7th—v. Grafton: Won by 9to pi].' May 14th—a*. North Shore: Wop by 6?'"■.' to nil. ■ , I May 28th—v. City: Won by 22 to nil.' Matches played, * 11; won, 10; lost, 1. Points for, 105; against, 24. Tries scored, 24; goals, 1:.. Tries were scored by A. Freeman (5), i.obevts (4), Eaton and C. Freeman (3). A. - . Wilson and Clarke (2), Mynott, Heath, Lewis, KirkAvood and Way (1). Eaton,? | kicked 6 goals from tries, 1 peip-lty j goal and 1 goal from a mark. Robert., i potted 3 goals from the field, and Freei man kicked 1 goal from a try. Eaton scored the most points (28), Roberta ? being second (24). I am informed (says a Wellington . 'Post' scribe) that there is every lik*lihood of two crack Otago backs and an Auckland champion in the same department shifting their quarters to '.Wellington ere next season cqmea round. Local enthusiasts Avill devoutly hope such good neAvs may be true for, reinforced by such sterling exponents of skilful back play as Auckland and Otago possess this season., . Wellington Avith her grand set of "forwards should take a pre-eminent place in future in interprovincial^ contests.
