MEMORIAL TO SIR GEO. GREY.
(To the Editor)
Sir, —The citizens of Auckland, more especially the workers, on whom rests the deeper debt of gratitude, should not let our departed G.O.M. get too cold in the ground before earnestly setting about to assist in completeing the work begun some two years ago, viz., to raise a fund for a memorial to him. At that time even some of his admirers declined to subscribe because he was then living. That no longer stands as a bar. Now it is safe to say his bitterest political opponents will readily contribute, remembering him .only as a great statesman, a greater philanthropist, and Auckland's greatest benefactor. The Executive of the old Memorial Committee who has, I believe, £107 in the bank, should at earliest possible date convene a meeting of its members for the purpose of inaugurating a public movement in the direction indicated. —I am, etc., J. FAWCUS. September 24, 1898.
