THE KENNEL.

(BY CANIS.)

TO CORRESPONDENTS

The writer's name and address are required with all letters, not necessarily for publication, but as a guarantee of good faith.

All communications on canine matters to be addressed to The Kennel editor.

In my last week's notes I said I hoped a record entry would be received for the coining Wellington Kennel Chib's show. T am. pleased to hear my wishes have been fully realised, and the entries total 330. Greyhounds, Collies, Setters and Terriers are said to be splendidly represented from all parts of the colony. This must be especially gratifying to the Club, considering they were forestalled in matter of dates by the recent Collie Club Executive.

Mr Parry, the newly-appointed secretary of the local kennel Club, is keeping1 things moving in connection with the show which takes place next month. A well-attended Committee meeting was held on Wednesday evening last., when a lot of preliminary business was got through.

On looking" carefully through the catalogue of the late New Zealand Collie Club's show I notice that many ot: the numerous classes were very poorly patronised, no les9 than nine different classes were not represented at all, whilst nine other classes only received one entry each.- No doubt a lot of these, useless classes will be eliminated next year.

I hear that Mr C. Bailey's Lady Belle has been mated with Mr T. IT. Bosworth's Sir Bryan. With luck Mr Bailey should have something a nice age for the puppy class in next year's Kennel Club's show. Mr John Robertson's (Te Koti) Tui has also recently been returned from a visit to Picton Gtreat Scot. Tui is bred from Mr Robertson's well-known working strain of Scotch Collies. Collie fanciers will hear with regret that Mr 11. Wark has had the misfortune to lose from the effects of poison his famous rough-coated Collie bitch champion Ormskirk Stella. 'SLrius,' in the Canterbury 'Times,' says:—'Stella was running about her owner's grounds in the best of health, but a few minutes later was seen to be in great distress, and though emetics were at once administered she died in convulsions soon after. Stella was bred by Mr T. IT. Stretch, and was S years old. She won 16 prizes in England and had an almost unbeaten record in New Zealand. She was the best Collie of either sex yet imported to the colony and was the clam of many winners, including- Champion Herd wick, Rimu Rex, Rimu Victor, Ormsbearer, and Rimu Prima Donna.' From the 'Leader' I learn that the. following gentlemen have been appointed to judge the various classes of dogs at the forthcoming Brighton (Vie.) show, viz., Messrs W. Beilby, for St. Bernards, Mastiffs, Newfoundlands, Bull-dogs, Bull Terriers, and Irish Terriers; W. T. Wright, Collies; Greyhounds, Pointers, Setters, Spaniels, Fox Terriers, A. S. McMichael; and remaining breeds, Mr T. H. Young. The Sydney 'Mail' says:—Seventy Samoyede dogs will accompany Mr Borchgrevinch in his expedition to the Antarctic regions. A country orchardist, finding his fruit rapidly disappearing" at night, invested in a savage dog to prevent the theft. He found the animal one morning last week hanging from the bough of a tree, the fruit of which had been annexed by the thieving rascals. A number of local breeders have lately been complaining of worms in their puppies, which they find a great difficulty in getting rid of. Freshlypowdered Areca nut is a good thing, but is not always effectual. Spratt's powders, given according to directions, are also verjr good, and I have found Naldire's powders effective when everything else has failed.
