The Parnell School Committee draw attention to a grand concert to be held on the 6th of next month in the Parnell Oddfellows' Hall.

The alleged British greed for Australian gold appears, at any rate, to be tempered by discretion. When the Orlando went Home the other day, after serving through three commissions as flagship on this station, her fleet paymaster took with him a number of Australian halfsovereigns .which had come to him in the ordinary way of business. In due course the vessel arrived at Portsmouth, and the members of the crew, cheerfully aud without any misgivings, began to tender these coins over the counters of the local shops. But the tradesmen knew too much. The halfsovereigns, they discovered, were of light weight, and, therefore, not of face value. Then there arose something like an agitation against any attempt to put the coins into circulation, in the country, though, of course, there was no imputation cast upon the good faith of the holders. Now, as a result of this, the Lords of the Admiralty have given directions to the effect that the possessors of the light weight half-sovereigns be indemnified, and that the coins be shipped back to Australia upon the first, opportunity which occurs.
