AN ALLEGED MIRACLE

PORTRAIT OF THE SAVIOUR TAKEN BY PHOTOGRAPHY.

ROME, June 14.

The 'Osservatore Romano,' the organ of the Vatican, announces the occurrence of a remarkable prodigy at Turin, by Avhich, after eighteen centuries, an authentic likeness of Jesus Christ has been obtained.

Among the relics of the House of Savoy is the winding-sheet in which, it is reported, the dead Saviour was wrapped by Joseph of Arimathea. On the sheet are almost imperceptible bloodstains, which faintly: outline the contour of the body Avhich it had swathed.

Recently this sacred relic was publicly exposed in the cathedral in Turin, and an amateur photographer named Secondo Pia obtained the King's pei-mission to photograph it.

On the negative being developed the bloodstains Avere reproduced with such clearness that the face, hands, and limbs of the Saviour are accurately shown. So life-like is the portrait that, according to the 'Osservatore,' it seems to have been taken directly from Jesus Himself.

A great sensation has been caused by this prodigy in Turin, and crowds of pious pilgrims are flocking to Pia's house.
