The Indictable . Offences Summary Jurisdiction ; Amendment BUI was .finally passed. second reading Of the Shorthand Keporters Bill.. He ; pointed-to the increasing use of shorthand" and/typewriting-, and said the employment of shorthand would. gfeatly facilitate the work-.0f..0ur- courts of justice.- The prejudice against using- shorthand in the Law Courts' had - diminished of late, even among members of the legal profession; t-ban since ]blie timte when a similar proposal to the present Bill was laid before Parliament. A judge had recently found shorthand reports (in ;the Brunner ca-se), of the'gTeatest: use. By the Bill the shorthand/reporters were made, officers of the courts,* and counsel would be ;able to obtain from them accurate transcriptions of the proceedings. The second reading was agreed to. The Slander ,of Women Bill passed through Committee without amendment, and was read a third time. :.
The Council having, on the motion of/the Hon. W. C. Walker, passed a resolution of condolence with the family of the late Sir Dillon Bell, journed at 4.30. p.m.
