THE POPULATION OF SIBERIA.
The idea that Siberia is filled with convicts is a mistake. Several thousands are annually sent beyond the Tjrals, but a large portion of the population is composed of emigrants from 1-lussia, Who have gone thither voluntarily, assisted by v the Russian Government. Of the exiles, there ate several classes. Desperate criminals form one; religious and political prisoners quite another: and the worst cases only ;are refused permission to . take their families •with them when going' to Siberia. All are, however, alike in one respect, that they are practically lost tother est of mankind; for they are separated from civilisation by! distances so enormous as to prevent communication. Few persons hava an adequate idea of the size of Siberia. The length of the country, from east to west, is nearly 4000 miles; its breadth from north to south exceeds 'M(jO, and it has over 5,000,000 square miles of territory, or nearly as much an the whole of North America, excluding Mexico.
