UNDESIRABLE IMMIGRANTS.
RESTRICTIVE LEGISLATION,
THE NEW GOVERNMENT BILL,

The Premier's Immigration Restriction Bill now has been circulated. The persons it proposes to prohibit are: (1) Any person who cannot fiill in an accompanying' schedule, merely the name, occupation, and addresses in any one of the languages of Europe, or comply with any simple education test directed by the Colonial Secretary; (2) any idiot or insane person; (3) any person suffering- from contagious disease which is loathsome or dangerous; (4) any person who, not having received a free pardon, has within two years of his or her arrival in the colony been convicted of an offence which if committed in Jfew Zealand would be punished by imprisonmentfor two years or upwards. Political offences are excluded. In the case of a husband being allowed to land, his wife or infant child will be permittedl to accompany him, even if they come under the list of prohibited persons. Heavy penalties are provided againgt persons assisting prohibited immigrants to land, and provision is made for sending such immigrants away from the colony again. The Asiatic Restriction Act, 1806, is repealed, but the'Chinese's'lmmigrants Act, 1881, remains in force.
