WATER SUPPLY ON GOLDFIELDS.
The " N.Z. Mines Record," under date of June lGth, has the following : — " Reports on the Thames low-level water-race, and domestic water-supplies for the mining townships of Coromandel, Karangabake, Waibi, Waitekauri, and Te Aroha (the last in combination with a scheme ior the electric-lighting of the Domain and the new bath-houses), are now in course of preparation by Mr T. Perham, who was instructed by the Under-Secrctary for Mines to visit the Hauraki Goldfields and report on these projects. An application has been received from the Omnemuri County Council for some assistance towards a proposed temporary water-supply for drinking purposes for the townships of Karangahake, Waihi, and Waitekauri ; and, as the matter has becomes one of great urgency, that the Government will take the required steps, as soon as Parliament meets, to get the necessary legislation passed to enable a proper water-supply to be provided for mining townships, as the districts interested cannot, owing to the nature of the goldfields tenures (these being leases and not freeholds), raise a loan under ' The Loans to Local Bodies Act, 188G.' Pending the receipt of Mr Perham's report, which is now being prepared, it is not proposed to take any action in the matter referred to."
