A BRAVE ACT.

JUMP FROM PRINCE'S BRIDGE,

Business people on their way into the city along St. Kilda road, Melbourne, a fortnight ago, AA'ere astonished to see a short, fair-haired man clamber on to the western parapet of Prince's Bridge, and then hurl himself from the railing,, striking the water 'heavily. He uttered no cry, and his arms were extended straightfrom the shoulders. For a feAv seconds he disappeared, and then, rising to the surface, began to struggle desperately and yelled for aid. Conl stable Vains lost no time in running" for a boat near EdAvards' boatshed, but meanwhile Mr Arthur Mulcahy. Avho was walking briskly along the bridge into town, saAv that no time was to be lost, and, Avith an utter disregard of consequences to himself, threw off his heavy overcoat, vaulted lightly on to the parapet, straightened himself up like a practised diver, and took a header to the Avater forty feet beloAv. He cut the water beautifully, and after coming up pulled himself by the overarm stroke to the droAvning man. A few powerful strokes brought him alongside his man, Avhom he seized, and holding at arms' length, supported until the policeman and Mr Tucker rowed up. Mr Muicahy's bravery had been noticed by a crowd of people, Avho cheered lustily. The rescued man and his preserver Avere then assisted into the boat and pulled ashore. On landing the man collapsed and Avas taken into the boatshed. On seeing that he W&s recovering, Mr Mulcahy went to his home. A cab Avas sent for, and the man he had rescued Avas taken to the Melbourne Hospital. In his pocket Avas 'found an elector's right for Ncav South Wales, issued to Nicholas Treble. He states that this is his name, and that he is 34 years of age. In all probability a cbarge of attempting to coml--mit suicide will be entered against him.
