FIRES.

The refdilcnco of Mr Wharton, goldsmith, North Gisborne, was destroyed by fire on May 27. Tho building was insured in the New Zealand Ollice for £175, and the furnituro for £155 in the South British.

A lire occurred at Domett, Cheviot, on May 22nd, which destroyed a wool shed and contents belonging to John Puschel. The insurance is £350 in the Alliance and £17 10s in the Sun. Tho loss is estimated at £150 above the insurance The origin of the lire is not known. •

John Box's Gladstone Hotel, Woodville, was totally destroyed by lire on June 7th. The building,' a wooden one, was 30 years old. The cause of the lire was a defective chimney. The stock and a portion of the furniture were saved. There is an insurance of £450 on the building in the New Zealand Ollice, and on stock and furnituro of £2SO in the North German.

The Manoia flour mill, owned by Mrs Miliroy, was totally destroyed by lire on Sunday, May 20. The building and plant' are insured in the South British Company for £900. A number of settlers who had grain stored are, uninsured, and arc heavy losers. Hubbard and Tait bad -wheat stored valued at £-100, on which they had a policy of £300, but it is staled let it lapse a few days before the fire. The White Hart Hotel, at Carter ton, and contents were totally destroyed by lire at mid-day on Juno 10th. The Lyceum was also destroyed. Bond's general store opposite was badly damaged and Brown's office was slightly injured. The insurances are :~- Hotel, £1300; furniture, £500 ; and Lyceum £400, in the Commercial Union. Mr M. Ryan, the licensee, had his face and hands badly burnt. He is a heavy loser. Bond's building is insured for £150 in the New Zealand Ollice and stock for £250 in the South British. Brown's ollice is insured for £100 in the Victoria offices.

The Star Hotel, Woodville, and a lar<m building adjoining, occupied by Mr Cox as a Singer's sewing machine shop, were destroyed by lire at four o'clock on May 2(5 The occupants of the hotel only saved what they s^pod in. Mr Cox saved his im-niture and stock. Mr Lemon's blacksmith's Shop was also destroyed, but most of the tools were saved. The water supply was limited. The lire originated in the hotel kitchen. The Star Hotel was occupied by Mr MeKav. Insurances: Hotel building, £750 iv the Phoenix and other oboes ; furniture, £100 in the United and 1-Joo m the Victoria.

A destructive lire occurred in Sarslioldstreet, Ponsonby, between 11 and 1" o clock on May 25, resulting \ n the total loss of a largo dwelling-house occupied by Mis Dufaur and family. The house, which was a two-storey building, roofed with slate, and eon taming about 24 rooms was one of the largest houses in Ponsonby, and was occupied by Messrs Ernest B. Dufaur, J? rank Dufaur, and Mrs and Miss Dufaur mother and sister of the owner.' The house was owned by Mr E. T. Duiaur, solicitor. Ihe building was insured for £1,250 in the Worth German Insurance Office, and the furnituro lor £1,000 in the same ollice ihe total insurances on the contents of the house were set down at about £1,000.
