CHARGE OF THEFT.

WELLINGTON; this day,

John Craig, late manager of Te Aro House', has been arrested on a charge of having between November Ist, 1596, and May Ist, 1898, stolen various sums amounting' in all to £700, being the property of the Bank of New Zealand. Counsel for the defence submitted that the whole affair was quite capable of explanation ; in fact, accused had offered his late employer (Mr frames Smith) explanations with which lie was seemingly perfectly satisfied. Accused was making a further explanation in counsel's office by appointment, when Detective Campbell put in an appearance and arrested him. Ultimately, the accused was remanded until Wednesday. Bail was allowed—himself in £50, and two sureties in £20 each.
